Miss Pham Hoang My Shows Her Áo Dài Costume

Allow me to introduce Miss Pham Hoang My. Some time ago, I asked her for a photoshoot, and she replied: “I will only pose in my own Áo dài.” Finally, here she is in a beautiful photoshoot at the Hanoi Citadel in Vietnam.

She wrote to me:

“My full name is Pham Hoang My (pronounced ‘Mi’). I was born in Hanoi, Vietnam, and raised here by my parents, who are also native Hanoians. I don’t know much about Áo dài in a formal sense, because it is actually the traditional Vietnamese costume. I grew up surrounded by Vietnamese women wearing Áo dài since I was a little girl.

I saw my grandmother in Áo dài, my mother in Áo dài, my teacher in Áo dài, my friends in Áo dài, and myself in Áo dài.

And I know that even an elderly Vietnamese woman, without the measurements of a Miss World contestant, is still very beautiful in Áo dài. She often looks more beautiful in Áo dài than many foreign women in other countries around the world. It is truly amazing. I am always proud of this, because I am Vietnamese and I can feel beautiful in our traditional costume. I don’t need to show off my body without clothing; I can still be beautiful in my modest way. Beauty is something you feel; it does not need explanation. So I will not say too much about myself, I prefer to let others feel it.”
